Under the leadership of Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwait-Saudi Arabia railway project is set to strengthen Kuwait’s transportation infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity. This project will make a significant contribution to the country's economic growth and logistical capacity. As part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network, it marks an important step in positioning Kuwait as a key hub for regional trade.

The Kuwait-Saudi Arabia railway project is of great significance for Kuwait as it strengthens the country's transportation infrastructure and enhances its regional and international trade connections. The project will modernize freight and passenger transportation, providing an alternative to road transport and supporting economic growth. Additionally, it will integrate Kuwait into the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network, contributing to the country's ambition of becoming a logistics hub.

Project Summary

  • Length of Planned Railway Network in Kuwait : 575 km long mainline

  • Length of the current GCC Component: 111 km long single track

  • Planned Railway Operation: Mixed Traffic (Both Passenger and Freight)

  • Passenger Train Speed: 200 km/h

  • Freight Train Speed: 120 km/h

Current Status:

Kuwait National Railway GCC Component (111 km) study, detailed design agreement was signed on 7th April 2025 and design studies has been started on 6th May 2025.

Phase I – Concept Design stage has been approved on 28th September 2025 and Phase II (Preparation of CAPEX & OPEX Analysis) and Phase III (Detailed Design) stages are started.
